Many People Continue to Experience Hair Loss After Covid-19

Reports continue to emerge about another side effect of Covid-19 – excessive hair loss. While there were some reports about hair loss occurring after battling the initial “version” of the virus, sources say that hair loss continues to be an issue for many patients regardless of whether they contracted omicron, delta, or any other variation of Covid-19.

According to a recent Fortune article, Hackensack University Medical Center released a report stating that excessive hair loss is a side effect many patients experience after contracting the virus and “after recovering from primary symptoms.” The hair loss can last six to nine months and is “especially prevalent among long-haul patients.”

Doctors say that the hair loss is not from the Covid virus itself but is the result of “overactive inflammation.” Such inflammation disrupts the natural hair growth cycle. Inflammation that causes excessive hair loss, also called telogen effluvium, can result from various illnesses or medical situations that tax the body. Telogen effluvium can also result from stressful or traumatic events.

The hospital noted that “among patients who had been hospitalized with COVID, 22% were dealing with hair loss months after being discharged.

The hospital also reported that 79% of the U.K.’s Institute of Trichologists members said they had seen patients with post-Covid hair loss last summer.

What Can You Do If You Are Experiencing Post-Covid Hair Loss?

Telogen effluvium is usually temporary. Hair can return to its normal cycle within months. Some, however, say it can take longer. According to Fortune, Dermatologists in Texas tell patients with post-covid hair loss that it can take up to a year and a half for the hair growth cycle to reset completely.

What can you do? The best thing is to speak to a medical professional about making sure you take proper care of your body and mind. Your doctor might suggest finding ways to ease stress, eating right, exercising, and taking vitamins to make sure you are on a path to good overall health.

You can explore hair replacement options as you wait for your natural hair to restore itself. You might want to try wearing a wig or getting hair integration to maximize the hair you have.

One more piece of advice – don’t stress too much about it. Do what you can to look and feel your best, so you don’t get stuck in the hair loss cycle.
