To help you better understand the causes of hair loss and the types of remedies in the marketplace, we've prepared this simple overview of pertinent information.
Medical Facts about Hair Loss
Approximately half of all males will experience male pattern baldness of one type or another by age 50, and 20-million women suffer from hair loss as well. Nature is usually the main culprit when it comes to losing your hair. Hairs are made of cells just like everything else in our body and go through different phases of growth and rest. As new cells form at the root, the hair is pushed out from its follicle away from the nourishment of blood and is shed. If no new hair replaces it in the follicle, baldness occurs.

There are three common factors for hair to stop growing. One is the hormone testosterone in both men and women. The scalp converts testosterone to DHT, which when exposed to hair follicles on the top of the head shrink them (but not on the sides and back). Since men have higher levels of testosterone, hair is more commonly lost. Women who enter menopause or after a hysterectomy also experience hormone changes that thin hair. Another cause is genetics. If your mother or father had thinning hair, the tendency is that it will be inherited. And last there is ageing. In men and women, hair gets thinner as we age. And because taking prescription medicines is more common as we get older, certain ones play a role in hair loss too.

Truths & Misconceptions
Brushing the hair forcefully or styles such as braiding that put extra tension on the hair can cause damage and compound the problem
Wearing hats does not affect hair loss because only the root of the hair gets blood nourishment to grow.
Shampooing frequently does not cause fall out. It is normal to lose 50-100 hairs daily. When we shampoo, we typically see an accumulation of hairs from recent days.
Blow-drying causes heat that damages the proteins in the hair, making them more fragile. Brushing during blow-drying compounds this. Using cooler settings is better.
Coloring and sprays do not cause hair loss. Chemicals might damage the hair strands but not the follicles beneath the skin.
Optional Remedy Choices

Many believe that non-surgical hair restoration is the "old reliable" approach to correcting hair loss problems. It's understood, convenient and safe. But you do have options and here are common knowledge views of them.

PRESCRIPTION DRUGS

The two most prevalent are Propecia and Rogaine, which contain substances that block the formation of DHT. But they have limitations. Depending on the individual, they may curtail the loss of hair or grow new hair if at all. There is no sufficient evidence that Propecia works for recession at the temporal areas. Rogaine (also available over the counter), does not work on all areas of the scalp either and the consensus is that any hair grown is hardly noticeable.

With both, consistent daily use is absolutely essential for any possible results that take months to develop. If you stop treatment, any hair you have gained will generally be lost. Possible side effects with Propecia are less desire for sex, difficulty in achieving an erection, and decrease in the amount of semen.

SURGICAL HAIR RESTORATION

This is an approach that has been caught-up in the marketing hype of the times and while it can help some, it is not viable for many. Results vary depending on the amount of donor hair you can supply from the back of your head. If you require substantial coverage, the desired result may not be possible. The procedures to surgical hair replacement have improved over the years, but it still requires surgery and the risks that go with it. Become well informed from your surgeon if this is your preference.
